Description
The Flax Fibre to Fabric Project (formerly the Flaxmobile Project) is a multidisciplinary, collaborative project, funded from May 2024 to April 2028, with the aim of developing an operational fibre flax value chain that mitigates GHG emissions, contributes to a net-zero economy, and supports socio-cultural resilience. The project is seeking two undergraduate or graduate-level research assistants (RAs), to conduct desk-based research to support historical analysis and mapping. The project uses transition design as a methodology for understanding the forces, both local and global, that have contributed to the loss of textile production in the region, defined as a wicked problem.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the RA is to gather and analyze historical data related to the evolution of the wicked problem. They will consult primary sources such as provincial censuses, government registers, agricultural records, and newspaper articles, to contribute to a historical timeline of events related to the social, infrastructural, economic, political, and environmental, aspects of the wicked problem. Attention will be paid to ensure knowledge being gathered is analyzed in such a way that it can be easily visualized on a timeline and presented back to the local community.
Skills
The applicant should have experience conducting fine art and/or craft research and be able to demonstrate strong analytical and critical writing skills. Attention to detail, to ensure accuracy in data collection, is also essential. The applicant will be required to work independently, as well as in collaboration with the lead researcher, research associate and fellow research assistants.
