We have several exciting opportunities for Groom Artists to join our team! Under the guidance of the Principal Hair/Fur Artist, Surfacing Supervisor, and/or Art Director on a CG animated project, the Groom Artist creates, hair and fur for creatures, characters and environments based on the determined look and visual style of the project.
Responsibilities and Duties
o Under the leadership of the Principal Hair/Fur Artist, the Grooming Artist creates and implements hair/fur surfacing and grooming of assets by using hair/fur grooming tools, digital painting and image mapping based on the determined look of a show.
o Collaborates with the lighting, surfacing and simulation teams to ensure techniques are being achieved and processes are followed.
o Collaborates with modeling, lighting, rigging and simulation teams to troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
o Quality checks that all elements are final, approved and ready for lighting department.
o Collaborates with CG Supervisor in order to manage render times required and final delivery.
o Interprets and implements notes and feedback from Director(s) and/or supervisors in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
o Adheres to digital file management protocols.

Qualifications and Skills
o Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience preferred.
o 2-3+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.
o Experience with Yeti, Shave and Haircut or Xgen is required
o Experience in UV mapping and texture layout using Maya.
o Advanced painting skills in Photoshop, Substance Painter and/or Mari with a strong understanding of colour theory and application.
o Proficiency using a variety of rendering tools including Red Shift, Renderman, Arnold and Maya is required.
o Eye for detail and good design sense is essential.
o Experience in advanced surfacing techniques such as global illumination and subsurface scattering.
o Strong verbal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate ideas clearly. Practices attentive and active listening. Incorporates feedback and direction received from the Director/Supervisor.

Layout Artist

We are looking for talented Layout Artists on an exciting new series! Under the guidance of the Layout Supervisor, on a CG animated film, the Layout Artist’s job is to make sure all elements needed in a shot are fully prepped and ready for animation.
We have openings at all levels, and on multiple projects for Layout, including:
o Madagascar: A Little Wild
o Barbie Series
o Barbie Interactive Project
o DreamWorks Series
Responsibilities and Duties
o Under the leadership of the Supervisor, the Layout Artist reviews scene folders making sure all necessary assets are ready for integration into the shot.
o Swaps out proxy models for final low-resolution animation ready models.
o Checks and references elements to make sure proper versions are used.
o Cross references that shots are cut to length. Collaborates with editorial to check for continuity between scenes.
o Collaborates with Pre-visualization Artists to ensure technical parameters for accuracy such as camera angles, focal lengths and composition are met.
o Interprets and implements notes and feedback from the Supervisor in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
o Under the guidance of the supervisor, creatively plus material in order to achieve set standards of complexity.
o Collaborates with animators to ensure all elements are included and set-up as required.
o Delivers assignments per project's schedules.
o Adheres to digital file management protocols.

Lighting Artist

We are looking for Lighting Artists on a current production! Under the guidance of the Lighting Supervisor and/or Leads, on a CG animated film, the Lighting Artist is tasked with lighting shots from start to finish as they evolve from preliminary lighting through final renders.
Responsibilities and Duties
o Under the leadership of the Lighting Supervisor and/or Leads, the Lighting Artist lights shots/sequences based on the rigs created by the Principal, Lead or Supervisor.
o Ability to work within the lighting and rendering pipeline and capable of troubleshooting common rendering and lighting technical issues.
o Interprets and implements notes and feedback form the Supervisor or Lead in a timely and quantitatively acceptable way.
o Collaborates with Surfacing Team in achieving the desired look and establishing the production design complexity and lighting behavioural consistency as it pertains to characters, props and environments.
o Collaborates with Effects Artists to test efficacy of the special effects, modifying lighting as necessary.
o Delivers assignments per project’s schedule.
o Adheres to digital file management protocols.

Qualifications and Skills
o Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience required.

o Ability to hone in on crafting a variety of lighting styles as necessitated by shot/sequences in a given project. Experience in photography is an asset.
o Strong understanding of principles of lighting (such as choice of light, placement of the light source, its direction and how to create the desired effect such as contrast and shadows). Knowledge of compositing a plus.
o Ability to apply knowledge of digital 3D animation, special effects and lighting. A demonstrated understanding of compositing principles and compositing software such as Nuke.
o Knowledge of Maya and rendering software such as Renderman, Redshift and/or Mentalray. Ability to script is an asset.
o Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the areas of rendering, lighting, shading and compositing.
o Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.

Modeling Artist

Under the guidance of the Director and/or Modeling Supervisor, on a CG animated film, the Modeling Artist builds digital assets including: characters, sets, props, vehicles and organic elements with the goal of creating 3D models that support a project’s story based on its defined style.
Responsibilities and Duties
o Translates 2D designs into 3D objects.
o Based on assigned area of expertise, constructs character models, vehicles, props and/or environmental models in alignment with the determined creative style and direction of a project.
o Collaborates with designers, riggers, surfacing artist, animators and technical directors in order to facilitate optimal shot production while adhering to the schedule and quota fulfillment.
o Collaborates with rigging team to set up articulation points for animation.
o Collaborates with surfacing artists to ensure models match aesthetic and creative requirements of the projects overall look.
o Collaborates with animation team to ensure models are structured in such a way to achieve intended performance requirements.
o Interprets and implements notes and feedback from Director(s) and/or supervisors in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.

o Working knowledge of human and animal anatomy, physical motion, weight, balance and form.
o Experience in 3D animation and rigging preferred.
o Proficiency in using Maya, Mudbox and ZBrush is required.

Production Coordinator

We are looking for an experienced Production Coordinator to join our team! Reporting to the Production Manager and/or the Line Producer, the Production Coordinator's main function is to serve as a liaison between Producers and Artists on the floor ensuring daily assignments are being fulfilled.
Responsibilities and Duties
o Assists the Producers, Directors, and the Production Managers on all areas of front-end and back-end production such as story, script, artwork, animation and post production.
o Enters and maintains production data such as artwork, scripts, storyboards, CG models, sets and backgrounds, layout and animation and LRC.
o Prepares and distributes casting materials such as sides, scripts and artwork.
o Produces and distributes production reports.
o Schedules meetings and reviews and ensures that preparations are made to facilitate these sessions.
o Records and publishes notes from meetings.

We have an exciting for Rigging Artists to join the team! Under the guidance of the Rigging Supervisor and/or Rigging Lead, the Rigging Artist will set up the articulation and deformation systems of characters, props and vehicles and present the Animators with systems that they can utilize to create animated magic. We need someone who is going to be hands on, jump right in and tackle any challenges.

o Create advanced character rigs and develop innovative methods to meet project objectives.

o Collaborates with other departments to resolve technical problems related to caching.
o Compares QuickTimes between approved Animation and generated caches to identify missing elements and intersection issues.

We have several exciting opportunities for Simulation Artists to join our Production Technology team! Under the guidance of the Lead Simulation Artist and/or Simulation Supervisor, on a CG animated project, the Simulation Artist is responsible for creating secondary animation such as hair and cloth simulation.
Responsibilities and Duties
o Responsible for the setup of simulation assets within existing pipeline for hair and cloth. Also, the setup of prototype or development assets for testing of new procedures and workflows.
o Runs shots for hair and cloth, including tuning of shot attributes, custom shot setup and hair and cloth shot finaling.
o Takes direction and feedback from the Supervisor or Director in dailies to establish character look and movement.
o Devises and innovates methods of working with rigs, nCloth and dynamics that meet production requirements.
o Evaluates any issues that may arise in the setup of creatures and devises efficient solutions.
o Collaborates with the Animation Director in the testing of characters and provides timely solutions to problems that are discovered.

Responsibilities and Duties
o Under the leadership of the Head of Story and/or a Senior Storyboard Artist, a Storyboard Artist, using designs, translates script pages into storyboard panels.
o Creates story sequences that reflect the emotional, action and or comedic intent of a scene/sequence.
o Actively participates in brainstorming sessions to come up with story, emotional and comedic ideas.
o Strong abilities to use staging, shot composition, screen direction and cutting for effective storytelling.
o Focuses on continuity from shot-to-shot in his/her assigned sequence in addition to collaborating with other story artists to ensure continuity from sequence to sequence.
o Depending on the project's requirements, the Storyboard artist generates artwork ranging from thumbnails to digitally enhanced final storyboard panels.
o Collaborates with editorial to provide materials be cut into the story reel.
o Collaborates with pre-visualization artists to ensure a smooth transition into 3D.
o Interprets and implements notes and feedback from Director(s) and or Head of Story in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
Qualifications and Skills
o Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience is preferred.
o 2-3+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.
o Strong drawing skills with the ability to capture character action, emotion and attitude through storyboard panels.
o Excellent storytelling skills.
o Solid knowledge of film grammar, shot composition and cinematographic tools and their use for optimal storytelling.
o Ability to adapt to a variety of styles ranging from cartoony to realistic.
o Experience with digital storyboarding tools.
o Strong verbal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate ideas clearly.

We are looking for talented Surfacing Artists on a short-term role in the studio. Under the guidance of the Supervisor and Leads, the Surfacing Artist creates and applies surface textures for characters, props, and environments based on the determined look and visual style of the project.
Responsibilities and Duties
• Under the leadership of the Surfacing Supervisor and the Leads, the Surfacing Artist Designs, creates and implements textures by using digital painting, image mapping or photographic techniques based on the determined look of a show.
• Collaborates with the lighting and shading teams to ensure techniques are being achieved and processes are followed.
• Collaborates with modeling, lighting, rigging and effects teams to troubleshoot creative and technical issues.
• Quality checks that all elements are final, approved and ready for the lighting department.
• Collaborates with compositing artists in order to manage render time required and final delivery.
• Interprets and implements notes and feedback from Director(s), leads and or supervisors in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
• Adheres to digital file management protocols.
• Supports and integrates the values of Mainframe: that being a commitment to innovation, creativity, professionalism and inspiration.
• Interacts respectfully and professionally with colleagues, staff members and clients.

Qualifications and Skills
• Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience preferred.
• 2-3+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.
• Experience in UV mapping and texture layout using Maya.
• Proficiency using a variety of rendering tools including Redshift, Arnold, Renderman, Maya, Mudbox and Substance Painter is required.
• Advanced painting skills with a strong understanding of color theory and application.
• Eye for detail and good design sense is essential.
• Experience in advanced surfacing techniques such as material development and subsurface scattering.
• Strong verbal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate ideas clearly. Practices attentive and active listening. Incorporates feedback and direction received from the Director/Supervisor.
• Open to and encourages feedback and new initiatives. Shares information and techniques with team members.
