The Welcoming Intercultural Newcomers Association (WINA), (formerly the Welcome BBQ Association), an intercultural organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is creating quality summer work experiences for young people including, students, aged 15 to 30 years.
WINA is also rebranding its services to focus on delivering programs and services with an International Newcomer Students Program (INSP) throughout the province of Nova Scotia. Today, more than ever, with the Covid-19 pandemic Canada, there is particular need to develop a platform, with other settlement organizations who recognize what it means to support INS holistically as they study in Canada.
WINA is committed to becoming a “Welcoming Newcomer Student Hub” provider of services for International Newcomer Students (INS) in order to enhance student success, student satisfaction and retention/recruitment in Nova Scotia.
The individual will be the Photographer, Videographer and Promotional Officer for WINA’s Annual Newcomers Welcome BBQs and all events that will welcome participants from diverse group of communities participate in an intercultural event.
The Annual Newcomers Welcome BBQ Event takes place every second Saturday in July (rain or shine) from 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m. at the South Commons in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Most recently, Halifax has welcomed thousands of newcomer refugees and their families and their testimonies support that the annual Newcomers’ BBQ has been herald as one of the fun-filled newcomers’ annual event.
The Annual Newcomers’ “Welcome BBQ” is a free intercultural family event planned and
delivered each year by a volunteer committee made up of individuals from a diverse group of
organizations. Our mission is to provide an accessible and friendly environment for those who
are new to HRM, and to take the opportunity to introduce newcomers to current residents as part
of the integration process.
The event is being organized and executed by WINA, who is the employer of this job opportunity.
The position is open to youth irrespective of their religion, age, gender, disability and sexuality,
and ethnicity.

The individual will be responsible to design and implement the Special Event Communications
and Marketing Office. The individual will also oversee the budget, inventory and operations of
the event. Therefore, the end product will be a Special Event Communication Marketing

    The individual should have at least two years’ experience managing multicultural community events. The individual will handle events from start to finish, leading a dedicated in-house team and external partners. As the primary point of contact for the events, you will primarily coordinate with partners, stakeholders, performers, vendors, volunteers and participants. Our ideal candidate should be studying in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or Media and Information Technology (MIT) and has successfully worked on events with 500+ attendees, with a great deal of self-sufficiency in accomplishing their duties. Our goal is to increase the number of participants at our annual events we hope you can help us get there. Thus, WINA is excited to offer the following conditions for hiring the individual: (a) is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; (b) youth aged 15 to 30 or students returning back to post-secondary education in the Fall of 2020; (c) is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

  2. International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. This could also be a Summer Co-op and Internship opportunities for up to 12 weeks to an individual currently registered in a Co-op Program at a university in HRM and this posting could lead to a future permanent after the internship. Degree Level Either Undergraduate or Master’s Degree Being enrolled currently as a post-secondary student is preferred but not required Degree Field(s) Visual Arts, or Media and Information Technology (MIT); (Event Planning, networking, communications) Experience Previous work experience in an administrative environment Having previous knowledge of and experience with any or all of the following will be considered as a strong asset: Photoshop, social media management, video editing software, and DSLR camera photography. Duties and Responsibilities ? Coordinate with vendors, exhibitors and stakeholders during event planning. ? Take photos and videos of WINA events. ? Perform basic edits (color correction, cropping) on photos and videos. ? Prepare and present slideshow of pictures/videos for WINA participants. ? Assist with WINA’s social media and other promotional efforts before and during events. ? Assist with visual asset development and graphic design for WINA. ? The individual will take guidance from the Special Event Coordinator. ? Attend events to capture visual assets (photos, video footage). ? Create and design marketing materials, including but not limited print and digital ads., posters, brochures, banners, billboards, videos, etc. ? Conduct market research regarding other intercultural marketing initiatives, visual Presentation. ? Review existing marketing initiatives, group discussions, collect feedback. ? Assist in special projects in marketing and communications as required. Page 4 of 4 Skills, Abilities & Expertise: ? Advanced computer skills with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), Final Cut or Adobe Premiere, etc. ? Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write in both marketing and journalistic style. ? Excellent communication skills with emphasis on presentation. ? Prepare reports and documentation and create materials for presentations. ? Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule. ? Ability to follow processes and practices with high attention to detail. ? Ability to multi-task, to prioritize and maintain an organized work environment. ? Personable and courteous in working relationships with stakeholder, partners, volunteers students and the public. ? Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve organizational goals. ? Must be detail oriented with a high level of accuracy. ? Ensure excellent database management. ? Accuracy and time management skills. ? Other Information
Wages: $16.00 per hour
Work Status: Full-Time Summer Placement from July 2, 2020 to September 22, 2020.
Hours of Work: 35 hours a week, full-time and must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.
