Contract salary for each position: $1,200 + housing Dates: August 12th - 30th 2019 (flexible) Location: West Branch, Nova Scotia (110 minutes from Halifax)

This employment opportunity is to catalogue the oeuvre of Nova Scotia-based visionary artist Paige Prichard Kennedy, who died in 2014, leaving behind her life's work. She immigrated to rural Nova Scotia from the United States in the 1970s. Kennedy’s natural surroundings as well as her yearning for a fair and peaceful world inspired the eco-feminist artworks she created. Kennedy mostly worked with acrylic on canvas, though she also produced an extensive collection of folk dolls, art dolls and collage. Kennedy’s family members do not have the time or capacity to complete this important project, and so are looking for two skilled individuals to catalogue her significant oeuvre. Each piece needs to be photographed and listed with its title, date and medium. Estimating dates for undated artworks will involve detective work, comparing paintings with sketches in her 13 dated sketchbooks and discerning her stylistic periods. Based on the size of the art collection, it is estimated that it will take two (2) individuals approximately 80 hours each to complete the task over a 3-week period. We would like this work to be completed between August 12th – 30th 2019, though there is some flexibility regarding these dates. Kennedy’s work is found in her two art studios, located in her former house and shop in the community of West Branch, where she lived for 36 years. It is about 30 minutes east of Tatamagouche and about 110 minutes north of Halifax. Kennedy’s husband of 40 years still lives at the house during the winters, and lives nearby in the summer. The house will be vacant, providing housing for the successful candidates. The house and shop were built by Kennedy and her husband in the 1970s and are full of character and charm. They sit on a beautiful 70-acre forested property with a river nearby.

This employment opportunity will be of interest to students looking to hone their cataloguing skills and who are also looking for a retreat before the fall 2019 semester begins. We welcome the successful candidates to bring their own art supplies and use the studio space provided. This opportunity will especially be of interest to students studying feminist artwork and/or artists who explore ecological and political themes in their art. Paige Prichard Kennedy showed her visionary artworks widely across Nova Scotia from the 1970s to the 2000s, including at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS), Eye Level Gallery and the MSVU Art Gallery. By cataloguing Kennedy’s life’s work you will be helping her family showcase and promote her art, carrying her important artistic legacy forward.
